Spring Roof Inspection Checklist for Oklahoma Homeowners (2026)
Spring in Oklahoma means warmer weather, blooming trees — and the start of severe storm season. March through June is when the OKC metro sees the most hail, high winds, and tornadoes. Before the first big storm rolls through, taking 30 minutes to inspect your roof can save you thousands of dollars in unexpected repairs. Here's a practical checklist you can use from the ground and your attic — no ladder required.
The Ground-Level Walkthrough
Start by walking around your home and looking up at the roof from every angle. You don't need to climb up there — in fact, we recommend you don't unless you're comfortable and have proper safety equipment. Here's what to look for from the ground:
Shingles
Look for shingles that are curling at the edges, buckling, or completely missing. After a long Oklahoma winter with freeze-thaw cycles, shingles can crack and loosen. If you see bare patches where shingles have blown off, that's an area where water can penetrate the underlayment and decking.
Gutters and Downspouts
Check your gutters for granule buildup — those small, sand-like particles that wash off asphalt shingles. A small amount of granule loss is normal on newer roofs, but heavy accumulation in your gutters or at the base of your downspouts indicates your shingles are deteriorating. Also make sure gutters are securely attached and draining away from your foundation.
Flashing
Look at the metal flashing around your chimney, vents, skylights, and where the roof meets a wall. Flashing that's pulled away, rusted, or visibly bent is a common entry point for water. Oklahoma's temperature swings — from 20°F nights to 75°F afternoons in early spring — cause metal to expand and contract, which can loosen flashing over time.
Soffits and Fascia
The soffits (underside of the roof overhang) and fascia (the board running along the roofline) should be intact and free of rot, peeling paint, or animal damage. Damaged soffits can allow moisture and pests into your attic.
The Attic Check
If you have attic access, grab a flashlight and spend a few minutes looking at the underside of your roof. This is where problems often show up first.
Daylight Through the Roof
Turn off the attic light and look for any pinpoints of daylight coming through the roof boards. Even small gaps mean water can get in during a storm.
Water Stains and Mold
Look for dark stains, discoloration, or mold on the underside of the decking and on the rafters. Water stains that follow a trail downhill from a higher point often indicate a leak near a vent, chimney, or flashing joint.
Insulation Condition
Wet, compressed, or displaced insulation is a sign of a past or ongoing leak. Proper attic insulation also plays a role in preventing ice dams during Oklahoma's occasional winter storms.
When to Call a Professional
If you spot any of the following during your inspection, it's time to call a licensed roofing contractor for a professional assessment:
- More than a few missing or damaged shingles
- Visible sagging in any section of the roof
- Active leaks or fresh water stains in the attic
- Heavy granule loss in gutters
- Flashing that's pulled away or visibly damaged
- Your roof is 15+ years old and hasn't been professionally inspected recently
A professional inspection goes beyond what you can see from the ground. We walk the roof, check every penetration point, assess the remaining life of your shingles, and document everything with photos. If there's storm damage, we'll help you file an insurance claim.
Why Spring Is the Best Time
Getting your roof inspected in spring — before peak storm season — gives you time to address any issues before they become emergencies. Roofing contractors are also less backed up in early spring compared to the post-storm rush in May and June, which means faster scheduling and more flexibility.
