7 Signs of Hail Damage Oklahoma Homeowners Often Miss

April 21, 20266 min readBy Jeff Scott, ScottBuilt Roofing

After a hailstorm rolls through Oklahoma City, many homeowners glance at their roof from the driveway, see no missing shingles, and assume everything is fine. That assumption can be an expensive mistake. Hail damage is often invisible from the ground — and if left unaddressed, it leads to leaks, mold, and premature roof failure. Here are seven signs of hail damage that most homeowners miss.

1. Granule Loss on Shingles

This is the most common form of hail damage and the hardest to spot from the ground. When hail strikes an asphalt shingle, it knocks loose the protective granules — the small, sand-like particles that give shingles their color and UV protection. You might notice dark spots or bald patches on your shingles where the granules have been displaced, exposing the black asphalt mat underneath.

Check your gutters and downspouts after a storm. If you see an unusual amount of granules collected in the gutters (more than normal weathering), your shingles likely took hits.

2. Soft Spots When You Press on a Shingle

Hail impacts can fracture the fiberglass mat inside an asphalt shingle without breaking the surface. These "bruises" create soft spots that feel spongy when pressed with your thumb. Over time, these compromised areas crack, curl, and allow water to penetrate. This type of damage is impossible to see from the ground — it requires a hands-on roof inspection.

3. Dented Roof Vents, Flashing, and Pipe Boots

Metal components on your roof are excellent hail indicators. Check your roof vents, plumbing pipe boots, flashing around chimneys, and any exposed metal trim. Hail leaves circular dents and dings on these surfaces. If your metal components are dented, your shingles almost certainly took damage too — metal is harder than asphalt.

4. Cracked or Dented Gutters

Your gutters take the same beating as your roof. Walk around your home and look at the top edge and face of your gutters. Hail dents on gutters are usually easy to spot — they appear as small, round depressions. Horizontal dents along the top edge of the gutter are a telltale sign of hail falling at an angle driven by wind.

5. Damaged Window Screens and Siding

Window screens are thin aluminum mesh — they show hail damage clearly. Look for small holes, tears, or dents in your screens. Similarly, check your siding for circular dents or cracks. Vinyl siding will crack on impact, while aluminum siding will dent. These are supporting evidence that strengthens your insurance claim by proving the storm's severity.

6. Cracked Shingles Without Missing Pieces

Large hail can crack a shingle without knocking any pieces loose. These hairline fractures may not be visible from 30 feet away, but they compromise the shingle's waterproofing ability. Over the following months, water seeps through the cracks, soaks the underlayment, and eventually reaches the roof deck. By the time you notice a water stain on your ceiling, the damage has been progressing for weeks or months.

7. Damaged Ridge Cap Shingles

The ridge cap — the shingles that run along the peak of your roof — is one of the most exposed areas and often sustains the worst hail damage. Because ridge caps sit at the highest point with no protection from surrounding shingles, they take direct hits. Cracked, split, or granule-stripped ridge caps are a strong indicator that the rest of the roof field also has damage.

Why Timing Matters

Oklahoma's hail season runs primarily from March through August, with April and May being the peak months. After any significant hailstorm (quarter-sized hail or larger), it's worth getting a professional inspection — even if everything looks fine from the ground. Most Oklahoma insurance policies give you 12 months from the date of the storm to file a claim, but the sooner you act, the easier it is to document the damage and get full coverage.

The Cost of Ignoring Hail Damage

Unrepaired hail damage shortens your roof's lifespan by years. Shingles with granule loss deteriorate faster under Oklahoma's intense summer sun. Cracked shingles allow moisture into the roof deck, leading to rot and mold. And if you try to file a claim months later, it becomes harder to prove the damage was caused by a specific storm event.
