Best Roofing Materials for Oklahoma Weather: Hail, Wind & Heat

April 5, 20266 min readBy Jeff Scott, ScottBuilt Roofing

Oklahoma weather doesn't go easy on roofs. Between baseball-sized hail, 70+ mph straight-line winds, scorching summer heat, and the occasional ice storm, your roofing material needs to be tough. Here's a breakdown of the best options for Oklahoma homes and what to consider when choosing.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

Cost: $4.50–$7.00 per sq ft installed

Lifespan: 25–30 years

Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminate shingles) are the most popular roofing material in Oklahoma. They offer a good balance of affordability, durability, and curb appeal. Most are rated for winds up to 110–130 mph and come with 30-year manufacturer warranties.

Best for: Homeowners looking for a solid, affordable option with good wind resistance.

Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles

Cost: $5.50–$8.50 per sq ft installed

Lifespan: 30+ years

If you live in Oklahoma, Class 4 shingles deserve serious consideration. These shingles are engineered to withstand the impact of 2-inch hail without cracking or losing granules. They're tested to the UL 2218 standard — the highest impact rating available.

The biggest advantage? Insurance savings. Many Oklahoma insurance companies offer premium discounts of 15–28% for homes with Class 4 roofs. Over time, these savings can offset the higher upfront cost.

Best for: Oklahoma homeowners who want maximum hail protection and long-term insurance savings.

Metal Roofing

Cost: $8.00–$14.00 per sq ft installed

Lifespan: 40–60+ years

Metal roofs are becoming increasingly popular in Oklahoma for good reason. They handle hail, wind (up to 140+ mph), and extreme heat better than almost any other material. Standing seam metal roofs are virtually maintenance-free and reflect solar heat, which can lower cooling costs in Oklahoma's brutal summers.

The main drawback is the higher upfront cost. However, when you factor in the 40–60 year lifespan and minimal maintenance, metal roofing often has the lowest total cost of ownership.

Best for: Homeowners planning to stay in their home long-term who want a "last roof you'll ever buy" solution.

3-Tab Asphalt Shingles

Cost: $3.50–$5.50 per sq ft installed

Lifespan: 15–20 years

3-tab shingles are the most budget-friendly option, but they're also the least durable in Oklahoma's climate. They have lower wind ratings (60–70 mph) and offer minimal hail resistance. While they can work for rental properties or short-term situations, we generally don't recommend them for Oklahoma homeowners who plan to stay in their home.

Best for: Budget-conscious situations where longevity isn't the top priority.

Our Recommendation for Oklahoma Homeowners

For most OKC homeowners, we recommend Class 4 impact-resistant architectural shingles. They offer the best combination of hail protection, wind resistance, curb appeal, and value — especially when you factor in the insurance premium discounts. If budget allows and you're staying long-term, metal roofing is an excellent investment.
